Planting wheat seeds on Saint Luca's Day at the P. Katalin Frangepán Grammar School’s Homok Kindergarten
Several traditions are linked to 13 December, for example kotyolás, carving Luca’s chair, Luca’s calendar and planting Luca-wheat seeds.
Planting Luca-wheat seeds: The ladies of the village planted wheat seeds in flat bowls near the kiln, which turned green around Christmas. This was a foretaste of the next year’s harvest. But later, this custom has transformed and the Luca-wheat was used to decorate the Christmas altar or was placed on the festive table.
Our kindergarten also revived the Luca’s Day tradition. The children planted wheat seeds in cups. They will look after and water them until Christmas, when they can take them home and make them a decoration for the festive table.
