August 20th is St. Stephen’s Day, also known as the Day of the New Bread.
The most fundamental food of humans, namely bread, has always symbolized life, sustenance and home. According to tradition, after the harvest, the first bread made from the new wheat was baked on St. Stephen’s Day. This is why the month of August is referred to as the “Month of the New Bread.” Throughout the country, harvest festivals were held on this day, where after completing the harvest, the reapers made wreaths or wheat dolls from wheat sheaves and wildflowers and carried them in a festive procession to the landlord. Afterward, celebrations were
held, marking the end of the harvest festival. The little students of Homok Kindergarten of the P. Katalin Frangepán Grammar School remembered this celebration with poems and songs, and they also made small loaves of bread symbolizing the new wheat.
